Facials…Far More Than Relaxation—A Critical Piece of Your Skin Care Regimen

You’ll see lots of differing opinions on the benefits of facial treatments. In fact, my Google search: “benefits of facials” yielded a whopping 591,000 search results.

While I’d agree that facials aren’t going to have magical or surgical-like results (they aren’t supposed to), I do know that, as part of a regular skin care regimen, they can provide results you can see and feel, which will have an impact on your self perception and on how others perceive you.

Think of it this way, our face is usually the first “thing” that people see when they look at us. It only makes sense that we’d put a wellness program in place to ensure that this aspect of our presentation to the world is a high priority.

So, because the world of facials can be a bit challenging to navigate I thought I’d put together a list of questions that you should ask before scheduling a facial with any reputable spa.

  1. Do your estheticians do a complimentary skin assessment? You don’t want to put your face in the hands of someone that won’t take the time to evaluate your skin beyond just skin type. You probably already know what your skin type is (oily, dry, sensitive, combination) anyway. An expert esthetician will do a thorough evaluation before recommending any treatment.
  2. Does the assessment include understanding your lifestyle, habits, and diet? This is key. Your skin is affected as much by your activities and the foods you eat as it is the moisturizers you use. A clear understanding of your lifestyle is critical to providing a facial that yields more than just relaxation (although that’s a great benefit, too!)
  3. Will your facial treatment be customized based on the assessment? While most spas have their basic menu of facial options, you want to know that your facial will be customized to your goals and your lifestyle for the best possible results.
  4. Does the spa offer special monthly treatment rates? Considering that a regular monthly professional facial can:
    • Increase circulation of the blood under the skin renewing skin cells.
    • Decrease “waste” underneath the skin that can cause puffiness, ruddiness, and fluid accumulation—detoxifying the skin.
    • Help smooth fine lines and promote collagen production, which is the building block of the skin to help prevent premature aging, wrinkles, and sagging of the skin.
    • Cleanse the pores on a much deeper level.
    • Help lighten dark spots and even out your skin tone.
    • All of which gives you a healthier complexion which improves your confidence and self-esteem.

Ask these key questions of a few spas in your neighborhood before choosing the facial solution that’s best for you. Use Back to School to Get Back to You!

As I write I’m juggling numerous responsibilities including preparing dinner for my two beautiful children, Zoey and EJ, taking a call from a spa employee with a question about our computer system; responding to kind reviews left for us on Facebook; researching marketing opportunities for the spa; and writing a blog post (among others but, really, I need to get this moving!).

I, like so many of our spa guests, am a working mom (or mompreneur as someone dubbed me recently), and I KNOW your struggles ladies! Some nights all I can think about is a big glass of wine. I also know that telling you to take time for yourself makes you scoff to yourself … “Yeah..not gonna happen!” Believe me, I get it. I OWN a spa and I have trouble making time to splurge on the very treatments that I think you should treat yourself to.

When I was a new mom, friends urged me to take care of myself, get a massage, sleep when the baby sleeps – hah! I appreciated their intent, but even the most well-meaning suggestions for relieving my trying-to-be-the-be-a-good-mom-while-juggle-life stress, always seemed to make me feel worse. Instead of sounding helpful and loving, urging me to ‘take good care of myself’ became just one more thing I was supposed to do to be a good mom, just one more thing I couldn’t do right.

So, while I can easily spout off all the reasons why pampering yourself with a relaxing massage, body wrap, or facial would help you de-stress and (giving you the potential to be a more relaxed, calm, patient, happy mom) I’m just going to suggest that you do something, anything, no matter how small, that help make you feel joyful or just makes you feel more like YOU! Whether it’s a bubble bath (after the kids are asleep or it will not be peaceful!) or kick-boxing, reading or meditating…take 15 minutes and enjoy being you. You’ll be surprised by how good it makes you feel! Caring for ourselves is necessary to care for our loved ones.

Remember, there’s nothing to add to your ‘to do’ and nothing to feel guilty about. You’ll get to it when you can get to it…and that okay.
