the dos and don’ts of waxing

At Spavia Foothills, we offer many waxing spa services, from brows to chest to legs. When you want to be bare and smooth, you don’t have to worry; we can help. In order to prepare for your waxing appointment, there are certain things you should do, and certain things you shouldn’t. Here is our list of the dos and don’ts of waxing:

DO: Allow the hair to grow at least a quarter inch long.

In order to properly remove the hair, it needs to be long enough to attach to the wax. Shorter hair breaks more easily, and may require us to tweeze excess hair.

DON’T: Spray tan less than 24 hours before your appointment.

Getting a spray tan before a wax is a recipe for patchy-looking skin. Save your spray tan for 24 hours after your waxing appointment.

DO: Take a shower before your appointment.

Waxing is most effective on clean skin. Taking a warm shower before your appointment will also open up your pores, which will make it easier to remove the hair.

DON’T: Get waxed if you have any cuts or sores.

If you have any cuts or sores on the area you wish to wax, wait until they heal before getting your wax treatment.

DO: Take a painkiller.

If you are prone to swelling or are anxious about the pain associated with waxing, taking an over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen 30 minutes before your appointment may help you.

DON’T: Drink caffeine before your appointment.

Stimulants such as caffeine tighten your pores, making it more difficult and painful to wax your skin, so save your latte for after your appointment.

what makes deep tissue massage different?

At Spavia Foothills, we offer a variety of massage therapy treatments. You may be familiar with the many health benefits that massage therapy offers, such as stress relief, improved sleep, and better mood. While all types of massage therapy offer these benefits, there are specific types that may be more helpful to address certain needs. One popular type of massage therapy is deep tissue massage.

Deep tissue massage is different than traditional massage therapy because it specifically deals with the deeper layers of tissue and muscles underneath the skin. The massage therapist uses slow pressure to concentrate on problem areas. For example, if you have a neck injury, your therapist will focus on breaking down any adhesions (painful bands of tissue) on your neck. You may experience discomfort from this process, but you can treat any pain you feel with ice afterwards. If you experience any muscle soreness after your massage, your massage therapist can recommend options to relieve your pain. It is a good idea to hydrate yourself after a deep tissue massage.

Deep tissue massage is particularly beneficial for those with certain injuries and conditions. Patients with such health issues as carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, sciatica, and fibromyalgia have reported that deep tissue massage is an effective treatment for their pain, even more so than chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture, or medication. However, deep tissue massage may not be helpful for everyone. People who are prone to blood clots, have recently had surgery, or have any open wounds should not get a deep tissue massage. Pregnant women and people with osteoporosis should ask their doctor before getting a deep tissue massage.
